Adventures in home ownership in Washington, DC

A Construction Crew

Country Edition

Renovating a whole house in our free time can sometimes be overwhelming. We had made a lot of progress by November, but there was still SO much to be done. Shortly after kitchen demo in October, Mike began to contemplate whether we would ever finish.

Luckily, we had some help that came in November! The rest of this post covers a few weeks of work.

Black Window Trim

Country Edition

Hello friends! While Mike was demo-ing the kitchen in October, I was experimenting with painting the window trim black! It’s a popular trend in the Modern Farmhouse style. Given the clean white walls, I thought it would be a nice contrast.

I find using painters tape tedious and I also have challenges where sometimes the paint will bleed behind the tape despite my best effort. I wanted to experiment with a different method so I tried using this Liquid Mask which I read about in a blog post. You just paint it on. It starts out white but then dries clear as shown below.

Kitchen Demo!

Country Edition

Back in October, we demo-ed the kitchen and by we, I mean mostly Mike.

The kitchen was really in good shape but just out-of-date. To remind you what it looked like:

Hardwood Floors!

Country Edition

There has been a lot of activity at the country house and so I am quite behind in posting. You may recall that in July and August we took up all the carpet in the main house. This post is for some work we did in September.

Here’s what the floor look liked once we pulled up the carpet, we had a decent subfloor underneath. Thambi is happily wondering through the construction debris.

Carpet Begone!

Country Edition

Hello friends! I am going to attempt to update more regularly. You will see the glacial pace in which we are updating the country house, in shorter bursts! These pics are from this summer; I am catching up to present day.

You may remember that the moment we moved in, Mike immediately started to rip up the carpets. To be fair, the carpets were white, old, and hella stained:

Here is what they used to look like, although this pic was from the listing and the sellers agent made it look more pristine than it was:

What they look like now, after the jump!
