Reno Time!

Scope of work

When we first decided to renovate the bathroom, I somehow convinced myself that this was a small renovation: just renovating a bathroom and creating another small one in the process. Even when we were told that we would have to move out for 2 months, still seemed small. Then the budget kept getting bigger, seemed small but just expensive. But now that the entire second floor is turned inside out, I realized that we basically are remodeling half of the house!

We’re about 3 weeks into the reno now but for today, I’ll walk all you lovely readers through what we are doing along with a few before pics!

Goodbye Ye Ol’ Bathroom

Our only bathroom in the entire house is spacious and functional, although not exactly pretty. Still, it was good enough and had it not been for the bathroom leaks we have had over the past few months, we probably wouldn’t have renovated so soon after buying the place (we moved in just over a year ago in Feb 2015).

Our bathroom had both a tub and a shower! So luxurious! Except we never used the tub. It turned into a luxurious laundry hamper for towels instead.

A few setbacks

Over the past few weeks here at the Red Rowhouse, we experienced a few setbacks. A certain fluffy puppy is to blame for the first set back.

Glorious, glorious…mud?

You may remember back in October, we planted some grass seed to replace the gray rocks that were in the front yard. 2 weeks later, we did have green grass in the front yard and it was marvelous! A picture from those heady days:

Let there be light!

Not too much has been happening at the house lately between the dog and the holiday season. The touch lamp that we were using to keep the dining area lit finally died so we decided to just buy a real light for above the dining table.

Ho-hum dining table with no overhead light:

Grass, Glorious Grass

I have been waiting for this day ever since we moved into the house. I was not a fan of the rocks in the front yard but as Roger says on This Old House, the best time to plant grass is the fall. As soon as September came, we called a landscaper to take up all the rocks and put down some soil and grass seed.

Painting the kitchen

After a much-needed 6 month break from painting, Mike and I were ready to tackle a couple of painting projects.

Goodbye, Ye Old Mustard

Before

Since we moved in, the kitchen had been the same mustard color that it was when we bought the house. Mike had done some patch work when we first moved in, when we had intended to paint it immediately after move in, but then we got lazy so the kitchen looked particularly neglected. You can see below that we had even prepped the AC vents with painters tape…and it had sat prepped like that for 6 months.
